CONFERENCE FOR ALUMNI PRACTITIONERS, EDUCATION MARKETING AND PR PROFESSIONALS, STUDENT RECRUITERS, INDUCTION AND RETENTION STAFF AT SCHOOLS, COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES:

  • Thursday 15 October 2009 - London, UK

USING AUDIO, VIDEO & PICTURES TO INFORM, ENGAGE, CONNECT & INDUCT!

Podcast and Video Conference Symbol (100 99 60 percent)AUDIO, VIDEO & PICTURES ONLINE 09 for the engagement of alumni, students and prospective students is an annual conference for everyone involved in marketing, recruitment, admissions and induction and retention at Universities, Colleges and Schools.

The conference will serve as a specialist forum for the discussion and exchange of best practice, insights, techniques, tools and ideas for using audio and video podcasts and web video and also pictures to recruit new pupils and students and to facilitate their smooth admission and settlement into their new School, College or University, helping to reach target numbers and increase retention.

Header Image Line 531

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

AUDIO, VIDEO & PICTURES ONLINE 09 will be of interest to a wide range of professionals at Universities, Colleges and Schools including:

  • admissions officers and registrars,

  • marketing and PR communications directors and managers,

  • alumni, development & fundraising managers and directors

  • staff involved in student enrollment, induction and welfare from departments/organisations such as the Students' Union, Library & Information Service, Accommodation Service, Sports, Academic departments etc,

  • senior management (academic & pastoral) at educational institutions of all sizes.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to focus on the use of audio and video podcasting and web video - whether you are already using these communication techniques to engage alumni, boost recruitment, PR communications, induction and retention at your institution or you are planning to introduce audio and/or video online for these purposes.

WHY ATTEND?

Audio Video Pictures Online Logo 2010 200 48The introduction of audio and video podcasting and its huge popularity amongst young people has created exciting new opportunities for communicating with prospective pupils and students and for informing and supporting them more effectively through the induction process.

Audio and video have been employed for some time by educational institutions as useful marketing and recruitment tools.

However the democratisation of digital media and the success of podcasting, and the associated web video, has made audio and video considerably cheaper, more flexible, more personal and more accessible for Schools, Colleges and Universities seeking to engage young people, staff, partners and alumni.

Podcasting requires new thinking, new understanding and new approaches to the older more formal uses of audio and video traditionally employed by institutions in their student recruitment and induction, PR and alumni communications.

The combination of a number of factors has lead to 'the coming of age' for audio and video as an effective, affordable medium for communicating with prospective and current students, making podcasting an essential part of any alumni, PR, student recruitment and induction strategy, including:

  • the popularity of the medium (the personal consumption of audio and video anywhere) first began with the portable radio and has been subsequently fueled by inventions such as the walkman, mobile phone and handheld gaming devices;
  • the launch and availability of digital audio and video (MP3 etc) players, such as iPods, mobile phones and PDAs, enabling people to possess and consume high quality digitised media on handheld and other devices at their convenience;
  • the parallel development of high quality, low cost audio and video recording and production/editing that can be used by anyone to produce programming;
  • the invention of the Internet and the wide availability of fast broadband access (the distribution system).

OMTAC Header Image Lapwww 300The potential is tremendous. People of all ages, but especially young people, have fully embraced this new way to consume and share audio and video, often downloading thousands of audio and video files and listening and watching online through websites such as YouTube, the BBC etc.

Audio and video podcasts and web video can be used in a wide range of situations to reach prospective and current students positively and achieve strategic PR and marketing goals, for example:

  • to bring new facilities and areas of Institutional excellence to the attention of prospective students with specialist interests - whether in a particular area of academic study or research, or in extra-curricular areas such as sport or accommodation or careers services;

  • to bring new facilities and areas of Institutional excellence and research and development expertise and developments to the attention of prospective commercial partners;

  • to introduce teaching and research staff and provide a taste of lectures or research projects, team work or case studies;

  • to address the needs and concerns of prospective International students, perhaps with current students providing insights and commentary in their own language;

  • to discuss career prospects, perhaps with successful alumni talking about their own career paths after leaving the School, College or University;

The potential for using audio and video online for communicating with and engaging alumni and for fundraising and development is also massive, for example:

  • for communicating recent or proposed changes and developments at the School, College or University;

  • for explaining fundraising initiatives;

  • for reporting on events, reunions etc of interest to alumni;

  • for distributing news and information, including interviews with current students, current and former staff, alumni, prestigious visitors to the institution etc;

  • for sending good wishes (video Christmas cards etc).

The advantages for Schools, Colleges & Universities using podcasting for student recruitment and induction include:

  • In a multi-media age with numerous calls for their attention, young people especially are attracted to new technologies and alternative sources of information that are packaged in formats they like, understand and use day to day;

  • Educational institutions that use these technologies and communication channels creatively will stand out from competitors and successfully capture the interest of their target audiences;

  • Schools, Colleges and Universities using audio and video gain credibility by demonstrating that they are actively participating in the media and information revolution currently underway;

  • Podcasting and web video is also a very effective way to communicate directly with the parents of students and those working in feeder schools and other third party opinion leaders/formers who may influence the decision making of prospective students or have an impact on their welfare during the induction period;

  • The use of audio and video podcasting and web video can generate additional positive public relations for the institution;

  • Audio and video can be a very effective way to convey the character and personality of an educational institution as the sum of many parts offering a particular kind of learning community to its existing students and staff, and prospective students and staff;

  • Once downloaded audio and video podcast material provided by a School, College or University is retained by the user and can be accessed and consumed anywhere at any time, many times.

  • Audio and video production is much cheaper than ever before with widely available technology and software, and the skills required to produce audio and video can even be self-taught;

  • Unlike printed materials etc, audio and video podcasts and web video can be quickly and inexpensively updated and distributed centrally, with the added benefit of automated subscriber groups using online notifications and feeds (RSS etc);

  • Users can easily share and recommend audio and video files they believe will be of interest to others;

  • Many educational institutions already have in-house the necessary skills, technologies and other resources required to produce audio and video;

  • There is considerable opportunity to combine audio and video production for student recruitment and induction with learning for current students, perhaps even developing new resources as part of the existing curriculum.

  • The uptake of audio and video marketing, guidance and support material can be easily measured and evaluated.

Podcast and Video Conference Symbol (100 99 60 percent)Developed by OMTAC (provider of training seminars and consultancy for education marketing and induction online) and leading practitioners, AUDIO, VIDEO & PICTURES ONLINE 09 is the annual "one stop shop" event in Europe for anyone:

"...involved in alumni and fundraising, student marketing and PR, admissions, registration, enrollment and induction who wishes to maximise the opportunities offered by Podcasting, Web Video, Pictures and the Internet for engaging, connecting and informing prospective and new students, their parents, alumni, the media and other opinion leaders."

WHAT WILL THE CONFERENCE COVER?

The Conference is intended to address the challenges in using audio and video podcasting and web video faced by those working in education with responsibility for alumni, PR communications, student recruitment and induction, including:

  • understanding the nature of the podcasting (audio), web video and pictures multi-media medium;

  • using the most appropriate applications for podcasting, pictures and web video to achieve the strategic needs of the institution;

  • OMTAC Header Image Lapwww 300
  • identifying and employing the resources required for the production and distribution of the audio and video material;

  • working with in-house skills and technologies (where they exist) for the benefit of existing students and to maximise return on investment;

  • determining the audio and video content, bringing together and managing participants/interviewees etc and planning the creative process to ensure the material is appropriate, engaging and accurate for the intended audience;

  • managing the production process to schedule and budget;

  • establishing and maintaining a suitable distribution system and distribution channels;

  • presenting and packaging the finished audio and video podcasts and web videos effectively to the target audience;

  • ensuring material is engaging and kept fresh and accurate and updated as required;

  • evaluating the uptake and impact of audio, pictures and video material;

  • exploiting the use of this medium to generate additional positive public relations for the institution.

(It is important that alumni, marketing and induction professionals know the target audience(s) - their needs, their interests, their concerns and desires - and this is assumed for the purposes of concentrating on the use of podcasting and web video.)
