WHY ARE WE OFFERING A ONE DAY SEMINAR ON 'HOW TO START & GROW YOUR ALUMNI COMMUNITY ONLINE'?
There is no better tool for alumni associations and those involved in Alumni Relations and Alumni Advancement, fundraising and development than the Internet... but the Internet is also the greatest threat to those institutions and alumni associations which do not understand and embrace it.
The launch of the Friends Reunited website in 2000 was the wake-up call... but a revolution is now underway... the real challenge to the role of the traditional alumni association, and the ability of Universities, Colleges and Schools, Employers, Business and Professional Networks and Clubs to serve as the main facilitator for alumni relations, is the rapid adoption by millions of people of "Social Networking" sites and platforms such as Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, LinkedIn, XING and Twitter... and coming soon is the 3-D Internet with Virtual Worlds and other new channels.
Former pupils, students, parents and staff can now find each other online and network without the involvement of the alumni association. This could be the death knell for alumni associations and have serious repurcussions for fundraising and development for Schools, Colleges and Universities.
Is there a future for the Alumni association? What impact will Social Networking have on fundraising and development? What can Schools, Colleges and Universities, Employers, Networks and Clubs do to exploit the Internet fully and not get left behind? We invite you to attend our Alumni Online Training Seminar to find out.
In summary the 1-day Seminar will provide those attending with:
- an overview of the Social and Professional Networking phenomena,
- the likely impact of the growth in Social and Professional Networking on alumni associations and fundraising and development in Education,
- opportunities for alumni associations and development offices to exploit Social and Professional Networking effectively,
- good practice in the use of Social and Professional Networking technologies,
- long-term strategies for utilising Social Networking for the benefit of an alumni, fundraising and development programme.
We have kept the 'How To Start & Grow Your Alumni Community Online' Seminar price as low as possible and we are limiting the number of people attending each Seminar to encourage interaction.

WHY FOCUS ON SOCIAL AND PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING?
Schools, Colleges and Universities, Alumni, Social and Professional Networks and Associations are vibrant, exciting communities and comprise multiple relationships across a wide variety of individuals and groups. When people are meeting day to day the management of such networks can be a challenge. Even more so when people leave.
Alumni associations have traditionally been the channel for maintaining contact with old school friends and former parents, staff, colleagues and fellow network and club members. More recently with the pressure on Schools, Colleges and Universities to find additional funding the traditional education "alumni network" has become increasingly important, and professional.
However for most people the alumni association is just one of many networks they are involved with and their day to day priorities may leave them with little time to manage their multiple relationships.
"Social Networking" is the common term being used to describe the increasing take-up by individuals of all ages and backgrounds, interests and experiences of social networking websites that have been designed to help individuals manage those personal and business relationships easily and inexpensively. The more popular these social and professional networking sites become the more relevant and applicable they are.
Recently there has been a dramatic shift away from specific network websites based on a particular theme such as School, College or University, dating, trade or profession to more general social network websites (from "Friends Reunited" to "Facebook").
Users of Social and Professional Networking websites, and there are now millions of them in the UK, will tend to visit their favourite network website regularly, perhaps daily, but will rarely bother visiting a more specific networks such as a School or College or Employer alumni website.
For example... over 550 million people are registered on Facebook, over 100 million are registered on LinkedIn and over 15 million on XING... millions more are using and reading blogs like Blooger, spending millions of hours on photo and sharing sites like YouTube and Flickr, and communicating en masse using mobile SMS tools like Twitter.
Longer term there is a clear danger that the services provided by Social Networking websites and their popularity will make the traditional alumni association largely obsolete, consequently frustrating the communications, fundraising and development efforts of the School, College or University, Alumni, Employer or Professional Network or Club.
Alternatively the success of the Social and Professional Networking websites could be seen to present considerable opportunity for pro-active alumni associations. The Social and Professional Networks have well developed functionality that can be exploited by alumni associations to identify and connect alumni and ensure their alma mater not only remains on their radar but has relevance and meaning to them.
By putting Social and Professional Networking at the centre of its strategy for maintaining the relationship between alumni and their alma mater an organisation, educational institution, network, employer or club can continue to build on the loyalty of staff, colleagues, students, parents and former parents and members.
