WEBCASTING YOUR NEXT EVENT(S)
Webcasting is ‘broadcasting’ over the Internet, live or on-demand, using streaming media technology to distribute a single content source online from anywhere in the world to one or many simultaneous listeners/viewers anywhere in the world. (Webcasting is not ‘web conferencing’ which is designed for many-to-many interaction.)
Webcasts can be made of Presentations (either stand-alone or at a Conference or Trade Show or Exhibition), Business Meetings, Seminars, Product or Service Launches, Corporate Communications, Press Conferences, E-learning, Distance-Learning, Training & Professional Development Sessions etc etc.
Webcasting (Eventcasting) can be “the next best thing to being there”, providing cost savings, offering environmental benefits, making Events accessible for those unable to travel for whatever reason, bridging time as well as distance, accelerating research, extending knowledge across geographic and cultural barriers and improving performance.
A range of Web 2.0 services and the availability of broadband have made the live transmission of an Event relatively inexpensive and straightforward. Video can be a simple, affordable and high quality method to capture and distribute presentations. Incredibly the technologies are now so universally available that anyone attending an Event can broadcast the content themselves without the involvement, knowledge or permission of Event & Meeting Organisers, using a mobile phone and/or a laptop and good Internet connection.
Good webcasts are more than streaming video and audio. Webcasting Applications and Platforms facilitate a combination of video, audio, presentation slides and interactive networking and communications.
Event & Meeting Planners must therefore consider a range of issues for the successful implementation and management of webcasting at their Event(s), such as:
- Pre-Event - What is webcasting? What are its uses? What is the criteria for selecting a Webcasting and Audio/Visual provider(s)? What issues need to be considered such as strategic objectives, timing, budgeting, resourcing, pricing and packaging, staffing and management, technology requirements, Speaker/Presenter support, Sponsor/Exhibitor involvement, branding, sales and marketing & PR? How to ensure the content will be suitable, meet the requirements and exceed the expectations of Users?
- During-Event - What support is required for online Users (registration, payment processing, Customer Service support) and on-site such as project management, moderation, facilitation, polling, surveying, voting, Question & Answer (Q&A) etc.
- Post-Event - How will content be organised (will it be searchable?) and what content can be gathered from online interaction during webcasting, how can User satisfaction be assessed and quantified, how can archived content be packaged, priced and otherwise leveraged post-Event, how can a successful Webcast project be developed to improve and market future Events?
