WHY ATTEND A ONE DAY SEMINAR ON "HOW TO USE SOCIAL NETWORKS & VIRTUAL WORLDS FOR HR & PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT"?
Internet technologies known collectively as Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 (such as social networks, virtual worlds, instant messaging, rss, blogging etc) are often regarded as threats to productivity, distracting staff from their work.
Employers are also increasingly concerned about their liability and the potential risks to reputation and service provision from staff accessing online networks, e-commerce systems etc.
Some employers, through their HR and IT departments, have responded by implementing procedures, blocking staff access to social networking sites and disciplining staff.
However treating Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 as negative influences in the workplace is short-sighted and ignores the growth and efficiencies that can be achieved from a positive, pro-active approach to these new and emerging Internet technologies.
HR & Personnel professionals have a key role to play in recognising and exploiting the tremendous opportunities for their organisation or business in the rapid development of social networking and virtual worlds on the Internet.
Employers that fail to understand and embrace these opportunities will be left behind by their competitors - continuing to overspend on HR systems, failing to increase productivity, lacking strategic thinking and ultimately inhibiting their organisation's expansion.
A forward thinking, dynamic HR & Personnel operation within an organisation or business (whether profit or not for profit, small or large) that utilises social networks and virtual worlds may experience significant cost savings and productivity benefits across a range of activities, such as:

- Recruitment (see our Recruit Online seminar)
- Induction
- Training and Distance Learning
- Coaching
- Assessment & Monitoring
- Leadership and Team Building
- Internal communications (local, regional and global)
- Home Working
- Project Management
- Business Development
- Sales and Marketing
- Customer Services
- Production/service design and innovation
- Change Management
- Organisational Restructuring
- Mergers & Acquisitions
- Strategic Management
How you utilise social networks and virtual worlds over the next 5 years could make all the difference to the future stability and growth of your company or organisation as you work to manage the impact of the credit crunch, the talent crunch, rising fuel costs, environmental awareness and accountability.
Social networks and virtual worlds can deliver efficiencies and competitive advantage. They have a role to play in improving staff retention and training, making the difference between profit and loss. They can help improve communications internally and externally, customer service, quality control and innovation.
PICTURE THIS...
Imagine if a website was not 2-D but 3-D and you could effectively step into it and see others "also on the same page" visiting the site... not only see them but walk up and interact with them in a "serious game" environment, like a computer game but in an environment designed for doing business...
Imagine being able to sit at your desk at work or home and yet be online in a virtual world where you are moving around a virtual space (with buildings, rooms and even virtual water coolers etc) meeting and interacting with colleagues, candidates and suppliers who are hundreds or thousands of miles away from your real world location...
Imagine that in this virtual environment you can have text or spoken conversations privately or with groups (conversations that might be in different languages, instantly translated by technology), you can make presentations (using multi-media and exchanging documentation), conduct interviews, carry out assessments, train or be trained, coach, mentor, meet candidates and employees (at all levels) regularly and easily over the long term, identify and develop new ways of working, and network formally and informally with colleagues, candidates and suppliers anywhere in the world...
Imagine that you can do all this conveniently at minimal cost to you, to your company, to others or to the environment. Imagine the benefits of embedding this kind of technology in your company or organisation today (not tomorrow while scrambling to catch-up and "paying through the nose" to do it).
By attending this seminar you will have the opportunity to explore the benefits, the challenges, the strategic implications and the methodology behind using social networks and virtual worlds for HR and Personnel management, and not be left behind as others move quickly to capitalise on these new technologies.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE SEMINAR?
The seminar will be of most interest to those working directly in human resource management for employers of all sizes, whether profit or not for profit (public and private sector), and managers and senior executives and business owners seeking new ways to develop their teams, innovate their use of human capital, improve productivity and communication and introduce efficiencies. Also recruitment companies wishing to learn about the opportunities social networks and virtual worlds represent for their clients.
Whatever the demographics of the workforce within your business or organisation these new technologies are highly relevant. While those in Generation X and Generation Y have grown up with easy access to the Internet and email and other technologies and tend to be the most familiar and comfortable with them (using social networks, chatrooms and messaging all the time), older users are increasingly registering for social networks and learning to use and exploit virtual worlds.
The fastest growing demographic for Facebook registrations is the over 25 years olds, with more than 80 million active users worldwide and 11 million in the UK.
The average age of Second Life’s 13m registered users is 31 years, with 25-34 year olds the largest age group. In a recent survey of 800 Second Life residents sponsored by France Telecom over 65% of respondents were found to be above the age of 25 and 37% of respondents were above the age of 35 years.

During the "How To Use Social Networks & Virtual Worlds For HR & Personnel Management" seminar we will discuss how employers can:
- Align activity with business objectives and structural and cultural priorities
- Understand and anticipate current and future change
- Embed new Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 new technologies in existing systems
- Use this new “enabling” technology to incentivise and motivate their workforce
- Develop specific, branded applications within social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn
- Use social networks and virtual worlds to “reduce clutter” with one-to-one and one-to-many communication tools

We will also address pre-conceptions and concerns around the issues of identity management, reliability, scalability, barriers to entry, data security and intellectual rights in social networks and virtual worlds.
We will examine uses for social networks and virtual worlds with case studies covering a number of employers. For example how IBM is using virtual world technologies to recruit, induct and foster collaboration (with such challenges as recently adding 20,000 new staff members in one year), how Xerox is using Second Life to run parallel events online for live events (with streaming video and text chat), how Cisco is also using Second Life and Sage is using Unisfair, how Bain & Company had great success using Second Life to engage and recruit leading business school students from top U.S. universities for Bain’s 36 worldwide offices etc.

WHY SHOULD EMPLOYERS FOCUS ON SOCIAL NETWORKS & VIRTUAL WORLDS?
Behind the hype around social networking and virtual worlds there are real business advantages for employers (shop floor to boardroom) who understand the opportunities they offer for their company or organisation:

- To reduce costs.
- To enhance brand development, positioning and immersion.
- To improve innovation and creativity in the workforce.
- To bring next-generation practices to HR and Personnel management.
- To make the organisation more efficient and introduce new tools for managers to use to meet targets.
- To free the company or organisation from normal geographical boundaries and costs and inefficiencies associated with travel etc.
- To establish competitive advantage through leading-edge management practicies.
As organisations like IBM, KPMG, Yell, RBS, PA Consulting, Microsoft, T-Mobile, eBay, GCHQ, PwC, Cisco, Xerox, Ernst & Young, Sage, TMP, GE, Accenture and many others have recently demonstrated, employers need to be more selective and more innovative in their use of media.
It is time to move beyond basic transactional models and utilise social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, Hi5 etc) and virtual worlds (Second Life, There, World of Warcraft, Unisfair etc) as a very effective medium for undertaking a huge range of activities in a highly interactive, immersive 3D world with multiple communication channels.
Social networks and virtual worlds are no longer the future of the Internet, they are highly relevant now.
Businesses and organisations which have already begun to exploit Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 functionality and networks are already reporting positive outcomes.
Forrester recently predicted in the report “Getting Real Work Done in Virtual Worlds” that the importance of virtual worlds will perhaps equal the web within five years.
Recent comments by employers and others already working with social networks and virtual worlds support this:
…“as an HR organisation, we need to ensure that as Web 2.0 technologies develop, we fully understand their potential and the likely impact on our business”…
…“HR professionals have been talking about collaboration and 'flat' organisations for the past 30 years, but they didn't have the means to do it. Now, technology's an enabler”…
…”no-one in HR can afford not to understand this technology”…
…”(a company or organisation can) increase the appeal of its employee brand and interact with employees and candidates on a more personal level”…
…”as a company, we're in the business of providing our clients with the information they need in new and innovative ways, so it's only right that we should take advantage of new technologies to do the same for our internal employees”…
…”Virtual world technology is a way to bring the company together to build a global corporate culture where people are on equal footing”…
…”it is impossible for everyone to get together physically, except at considerable expense and time; they now have a private virtual world, built in Second Life, to live in and collaborate, both on work or a social basis”…
…”Geography doesn't seem to be the barrier it once was”…
