NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Despite the heavy snowfall many delegates still managed to attend the ALUMNI ONLINE 09 Conference in London organised by OMTAC Ltd and it proved a very productive, successful day.
The Internet is all about multi-media. One way to distinguish an organisation or business from competitors is to offer relevant film for visitors to view online… whether introducing the ethos of an organisation, presenting a service, demonstrating a product or having fun.
In the past any Marketing Manager contemplating offering multi-media would have had to set aside a large budget and a great deal of time for professional production and for tackling the technical challenges of offering film on a website. If you visit a website that offers film clips you may find yourself forced to download a film player like Quicktime or Real Player before you can even view the film. DVD production brings all sorts of challenges too, like production costs and management, long timescales, compatibility issues, distribution challenges, dating etc.
YouTube and similar sites offer an instantaneous, free alternative. You still have to prepare a film but the expectations about film quality are immediately lower with YouTube, you simply load your film on to your computer hard drive, create a YouTube account and load up your film… you are then given code by YouTube which you can drop into your own website’s Content Management System for it to stream seamlessly to your website (see below).
As a result you benefit from a potential audience of millions within YouTube (an audience that, as with Wikipedia and MySpace, should not be stereotyped as it comprises all ages, ethnicity, cultures etc), you benefit from higher Google ranking and you potentially benefit from much higher engagement of visitors to your website who immediately see it as more interesting, informative and credible than the sites of competitors that lack multi-media or only offer multi-media through particular media players.
Yes, YouTube may have some less flattering film on it about your organisation, sector or product but what is the best way to tackle this? With positive PR! There is nothing better than positive film such as that produced by the Leavers of Croham Hurst School, embedded in this page using the code provided by YouTube:
For an example of how a promotional film can be used on YouTube and on a website search for “Snotribe” in Google and click on the YouTube link to see the film clip within the YouTube site and see how the Profile, Comments etc work.
YouTube was named TIME magazine's "Invention of the Year" for 2006.
Google Inc. acquired the company for US$1.65 billion in Google's stock on 13 November 2006.
100 million clips are viewed daily on YouTube, with an additional 65,000 new videos uploaded per 24 hours. (July 2006)
YouTube has 20+ million visitors each month, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, where around 44% are female, 56% male, and the 12- to 17-year-old age group is dominant.
YouTube's pre-eminence in the online video market is staggering - YouTube commands up to 64% of the UK online video market (Hitwise.com).
